![]() ![]() Again have not had a chance to compare Compressed VS uncompressed of a star filled sky. So I took a few RAW compressed images and made sure they worked in PI and DSS and they did. I know the last post for this topic was 3 months ago but I was running into the same issue so ended up doing a lot of research when I found out the last time DCRAW was updated and realized that at that time Sony only did compressed RAW images. If you want to use the Sony Uncompressed Raw files you will need to get some software to convert the ARW to DNG i.e. So PI and DSS will handle the Sony Compressed Raw files on their own with no issues. I looked through many websites comparing the Uncompressed vs Compressed RAW images of a Sony camera and it was very difficult for me to tell any difference in the 2 (note: none of these websites were taking images of the stars so not sure if it'll affect that or not and havn't had time to test the difference myself) At the time of the last update to DCRAW Sony cameras did not do uncompressed RAW files as this option was added later with a firmware update. The reason you need to use the Compressed RAW is because PI (and also DeepSkyStacker) uses a program called DCRAW to decode the Raw Image and the last update to this program was I believe 4 years ago (Dave Coffin the programer of DCRAW may still be working on it but I havn't seen an update on it if he is). Quality needs to be Set to Raw and RAW file Type needs to be set to compressed). ![]() ![]() The issue actually comes down to Compressed vs Uncompressed Raw (Menu: Camera Icon tab pg 1. ![]()
